F. ID 25-1869 Consider approval of a resolution of the City of Denton, Texas, recognizing June as Denton LGBTQ+ Pride Month, and providing an effective date.
The City of Denton should send the message that it supports it's LGBTQ+ community especially with hostility they are facing from the state and federal government.
Please support this resolution. At a time when open bigotry has been normalized and encouraged by some elected officials and their supporters in both Texas and the entire country, Denton should make it clear that it is a safe, accepting, and welcoming place for LGBTQ people and their families. This resolution would be good step forward.
I oppose this resolution. No one person or group is special. We all have our own problems and strengths. Creating an official 'Denton Pride Month' is giving unequal treatment to one group. Additionally, we don't need Pride Month in general. In 2025 no one fears or persecutes people who are LGBT, no one has a problem when a gay couple moves in next door. We are past that as a society. Recognizing 'Denton Pride Month' would be a step backwards.
I moved to Denton in 2022 because I wanted to feel safe in an area of Texas that supports the LGBTQ+ community. It's genuinely hard to find a place in this state that makes us feel welcome. Denton is known for it's diverse community and recognizing Pride Month would be a great step at keeping our people feel a bit safer walking down our streets.
